Subtraction Cutting and Julian Roberts

Subtraction cutting has no wrong or right way and has a never ending way of making outcomes.
I think it was very interesting to try and reminded me of the Diversity project, even though the way that I did that dress was much more complicated and intricate. This technique is not very technical with numbers and much more experimental which really made it exciting to work with.

Sew three sides by machine and bag out (2 long sides and 1 short side).

Draw 2 circles on one side. The close the circles the less fabric will be subtracted. The further the circles the more fabric will be subtracted.

On the other side draw the back and front, they can be close or far apart. Then do a curve to join them together. And cut out just the top layer.

Sew the shoulders and sides of the dress. Stitch the circles together.

Put dress on a mannequin , then two further holes can be decided if necessary to add more to the dress.

Final dress

Julian Roberts came in and talked about his cutting technique which he invented. The possibilities in Subtraction cutting are endless and there is no real way to go wrong with the technique. I found it very interesting and it really did remind me of my dress I made for the Diversity project, even though that was a completely different and more complex technique with patterns. This was more relaxing and interesting because the outcome could be anything!
