Childrenswear; Paul Denicci

With the Childrenswear project coming to a close, I can certainly say that it has been an interesting 5 weeks of learning!
I chose Childrenswear because it was something very different, to the normal mens' and womenswear. I knew I would learn a lot about it, especially things I didn't know before!
The project was much more digital based with the use of both Photoshop and Illustrator, mixed with drawing and I knew it would be very good to develop these skills, because it is so widely used in the industry today.

The theme I picked was Ballet. I picked it because it is very graceful, soft and feminine. Looking from the WGSN Trends for Spring/Summer 2016, where one of the trends was also called 'Graceful'. This was a completely different to the approach I had in other projects, especially with colour, print and pattern.

My Ballerina Motif that I drew, scanned into photoshop and repeated
(I did not use the repeat print, I only used one ballerina as a motif for a garment)

Ballerina Print, drawing and using Photoshop and Illustrator
This repeating print, in another colourway was used on a blanket)

Things that I did different to a womenswear brief were:

  • Using child-like fonts
  • Making flat drawings and illustrations more cuter and appealing for children (curved and softer)
  • Making appropriate fabric choices to suit babies and children
All of these things were very important because Children's clothing is known to be very fun, cartoon-like and cute.

Portfolio Pages

After talking to Tania, I was able to improve my pages before I would see her. She really liked my approach and direction on the project and theme. My improved pages are not shown here. They grey colour in the page above was too dominating and so I changed that on the baby grow.

Overall it has been a good experience and I have learnt a lot in just 5 weeks of doing this project and I am excited to present my work to her in May.
