For my final major project I have chosen to use different techniques than those I have already learnt as the ones I am using now relate best to my Taj Mahal theme. Although it's a risk because I haven't used many of these companies before, it's all a part of the learning curve and I have organisaed enough time for sampling incase things didn't look or feel the way I wanted them to. I am excited about using something other than print, as my whole portfolio is print based and it shows another technique and side to my work.
My final major project is based on the Taj Mahal and I have been looking at geometrics as print inspiration but to be made into laser cut or engraved samples.
The file set up for laser cutting was very complicated, but after trial and error I was able to figure out a way that worked with the laser company I worked with. The reason it was trial and error was because the laser's width had to be taken into consideration to ensure the laser wouldn't burn from one shape into another. Overall I am pleased with the samples and I can use this a base for the rest of my designing stages.
Left to right: laser cut on chiffon, engraving on leather, laser cut on neoprene and laser cut on leather.
These are my favourite because they worked the best and the neoprene black one in the middle turned out perfect.
Laser engraving on leather
It almost looks like the design has been screen printed on, except the laser makes sure every detail comes out and there is no mess or ink splattered around. The pigment also wouldn't crack or print because it's a laser that has burned into the fabric.
laser cut on satin
This one turned out very well and the lines could also be embellished to make it more exciting.
laser cutting on satin
This design was much more fine but it worked and looks very exciting.
Laser cutting on sequin fabric
This was the fabric that I thought was not going to work but it did. The sequins did some off the laser cutting but it still worked incredibly well.
Laser cut on leather. This one didn't work because the shapes were too close and although on the computer the shapes didn't touch, I didn't keep the tolerance in mind and it burned through multiple shapes.
Laser cut on satin
This design on satin also worked very well, although the back shows a lot of burn marks and is similar to the one on the sequin fabric.
Overall I am very happy with the sampling and there are certainly some that I use for my final major project garments. Sampling ensured that it was the result I wanted and which fabrics would work better than others.
