This week was very interesting, looking at Applique within fashion. Applique is layering on a shape or pattern onto fabric and sewing around. Over the years many designers have adapted this technique into their collections like below!
 |
| Dolce and Gabbana Fall 2014 |
Several shapes have been sewn together onto the fabric to create intricate patterns for their collection inspired by a forrest. Animals from foxes to owl's were sewn onto dresses and coats.
 |
| Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2012 |
Valentino introduced very luxurious fabrics mixed with structured fabrics like Organza for their Couture show with tonnes of applique covering their dresses in the most beautiful way!
 |
| Valentino Couture Fall 2012 |
Valentino a season later, used leather and sheer fabrics to applique a stiffer and tougher fabric to the garment, sexy yet still looks modest with how it covers the model.
 |
| Versace Spring 2009 |
Versace used hearts appliqued all over their dresses that were young, fresh and bold. Even 3D hearts all layered together with reverse applique also applied.
 |
| Gucci Fall |
Gucci had in my opinion a stunning show for their collection! They used leathers, chiffons, Organza's and Velvet for their show. The mix of fabrics really made every look feel elegant yet strong and bold. The applique reminds me of baroque patterns as they are draped over the model's top.

| Marchesa Spring 2012 |
Marchesa used lots of applique all over the dress of their collection. It featured intricate patterns and mainly embroidered pieces over the garment.
It was then my turn to try some applique. I had done quite a lot of this before at school and Sixth Form but it was pretty basic, using fabrics like felt that doesn't fray. I was able to learn a new technique that allows me to turn the fabric under so that the edges don't show. This was great to learn and even a technique I may use in my upcoming projects.

| Completed basic Applique |
To do this type of applique I cut out the stencil for the flower on paper. Then I pinned it to the red fabric, leaving 1cm around the edges and pinned it to the backing fabric. Then I folded it under and sewed around it only taking the needle through the fabric at an angle and not up and down the fabric.
After this I will definitely try out more methods and even reverse applique or adding more details to it!
